In a world that often demands so much of us, finding and holding onto joy can feel like a revolutionary act. For Black women especially, joy is not just an emotion—it’s an act of resistance, self-love, and survival. Choosing joy means choosing ourselves, our peace, and our worth, no matter what the world throws our way.
But joy isn’t something we have to wait for. It isn’t reserved for the “big” moments or the perfect circumstances. Joy is available to us every single day, if we’re willing to embrace it and make space for it in our lives.
Let’s talk about why joy matters and how we can celebrate ourselves daily.
Joy as Resistance and Self-Love

For too long, society has painted strength and resilience as the only defining traits of Black women, as if joy is a luxury we can’t afford. But I’m here to tell you that joy is your birthright. It’s not something you earn; it’s something you claim.
When we choose joy, we are rejecting the idea that our worth is tied to struggle. We are declaring that we deserve happiness, peace, and moments of light, no matter what challenges we face. Joy isn’t selfish—it’s a form of self-love, a way of honoring the beauty and complexity of who we are.
Every time you laugh, dance, or smile despite the chaos around you, you are resisting the narrative that says you must carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. Joy is freedom, and it’s yours to claim.
Simple Ways to Celebrate Yourself Every Day
You don’t need a big reason to celebrate yourself. Here are some small but meaningful ways to embrace joy daily:
1. Start Your Day with Gratitude
• Each morning, write down three things you’re grateful for. Focusing on what brings you joy sets the tone for the day ahead.
2. Create a “Joy Ritual”
• Dedicate time each day to something that makes you happy, whether it’s listening to your favorite song, dancing in your kitchen, or sipping your favorite tea.
3. Speak Life Over Yourself
• Look in the mirror and affirm your worth: “I am enough.” “I deserve joy.” “I am worthy of love and peace.”
4. Celebrate Small Wins
• Did you finish a project? Cook a great meal? Make it through a tough day? Celebrate it! Reward yourself with something that feels good, even if it’s just a few moments of quiet reflection.
5. Surround Yourself with What You Love
• Fill your space with things that bring you joy—photos, plants, art, music, or anything that lifts your spirit.
6. Pause for Pleasure
• Take a break from your busy day to do something that delights you. Read a book, take a walk, watch a funny video—whatever makes your heart lighter.
7. Share Joy with Others
• Call a friend, write a kind note, or compliment someone. Joy multiplies when we share it with others.
Redefining Happiness on Your Own Terms
Happiness isn’t one-size-fits-all. What brings joy to someone else might not resonate with you—and that’s okay. Your happiness is yours to define.
Start by asking yourself:
• What makes me feel alive?
• When do I feel most at peace?
• How can I bring more of that into my life?
Give yourself permission to create a life that feels good to you, even if it doesn’t look like anyone else’s. True joy comes from living authentically, honoring what makes you unique, and embracing the things that bring you genuine happiness.
A Personal Note and My Upcoming Book
Reclaiming joy has been a journey for me, one that has required unlearning old narratives and choosing to celebrate myself daily. It’s a theme that weaves through my upcoming book, “I’m Not Just Another Angry Black Woman.”
This book is a testament to the resilience, strength, and joy of Black women. It’s about breaking free from stereotypes and reclaiming our right to laugh, love, dream, and flourish. As we step into 2025, let’s commit to prioritizing our joy and celebrating ourselves unapologetically.
You are worthy of a life filled with light and love. Joy isn’t a luxury—it’s your birthright. So go ahead, sister: laugh loudly, dance freely, and embrace the beauty of who you are.
With love and joy,
Lakeysha
