Remaining Grounded in the Midst of Chaos

We got this!

The Reality: Chaos Will Come

Let’s be honest: life isn’t always calm seas and sunny skies. Bills stack up. Relationships shift. The news feels heavy. Our mental load gets overwhelming.

Chaos, in all its forms, can shake us to the core. But here’s the truth: chaos doesn’t have to control you.

Remaining grounded doesn’t mean pretending the storm isn’t real—it means remembering that you are rooted deeper than the storm is strong.

1. Anchor Yourself in God’s Presence

When everything feels unstable, the first anchor is your faith.

Psalm 46:10 reminds us: “Be still, and know that I am God.”

Stillness doesn’t erase the storm—it reminds you that you’re not weathering it alone.

Grounding practices with God:

Begin the day with 5 minutes of prayer before scrolling. Meditate on a single verse and breathe it in. Whisper the name of Jesus when your mind starts racing.

Resource: YouVersion Bible App — offers guided devotionals, verse-of-the-day reflections, and prayer plans for anxious times.

2. Regulate Your Nervous System

Chaos lives in the body, too—not just the mind. That’s why you feel knots in your stomach, racing thoughts, or tension in your shoulders.

Grounding exercises:

5-4-3-2-1 Technique: Identify 5 things you see, 4 things you feel, 3 things you hear, 2 things you smell, 1 thing you taste. Breath Prayer: Inhale “Peace of God” / Exhale “Be still.” Progressive Muscle Relaxation: Tense and release each muscle group slowly.

Resource: Headspace or Insight Timer — free apps with guided meditations, grounding practices, and breathwork.

3. Process, Don’t Suppress

Bottling up your emotions is like shaking a soda can—eventually, it explodes. Writing, therapy, or talking to a safe friend helps you release what’s too heavy to carry alone.

Ways to process:

Journal daily (even just a few lines). Talk with a therapist or counselor. Share vulnerably with an accountability partner.

Resource: Therapy for Black Girls — directory to find culturally competent therapists who understand the layers of chaos women of color carry.

4. Limit Inputs That Fuel Chaos

Sometimes chaos isn’t just happening around us—it’s happening because of what we consume. Constant negative news, social media drama, or toxic conversations can destabilize your spirit.

Practical steps:

Turn off breaking news notifications. Schedule “social media sabbath” hours. Protect your peace by muting or unfollowing accounts that drain you.

Resource: Freedom App — helps block distracting or toxic apps when you need mental quiet.

5. Lean Into Community

Chaos can make you want to isolate, but solitude isn’t always healing. Sometimes grounding comes from having someone remind you: “Sis, you’re not alone.”

Community grounding:

Join a women’s Bible study or prayer group. Call that one friend who brings you back to yourself. Be honest when you’re not okay.

Resource: GirlTrek — a national health movement for Black women using walking, sisterhood, and community care as therapy.

✨ Affirmation for Chaotic Seasons

“I am rooted. I am steady. I may bend, but I will not break.

God is my anchor, peace is my portion, and chaos cannot shake my soul.”

📓 Journal Prompts for Reflection

What is one area of my life that feels chaotic right now? What grounding practices help me feel safe and present? Who or what anchors me when I feel unsteady? How can I invite God’s peace into my daily rhythm?

💕 Final Word From Your Girl Keysha

Chaos will always try to pull you out of yourself, but you are not powerless. You are rooted, loved, and equipped. Ground yourself in God’s presence, regulate your body, process your emotions, guard your inputs, and lean into your people.

Because sis, storms don’t last forever—but your spirit, anchored in love, will. 🌸
