Juneteenth: Celebrating Freedom, Resilience, and the Power to Keep Going

June 19, 2026

Juneteenth 🫶🏽

Hey friends! 💛

So… technically this should have been yesterday’s Thursday blog.

But life was life-ing, and before I knew it, Thursday came and went.

Honestly, though? I think it worked out exactly the way it was supposed to.

Because today is Juneteenth.

And I couldn’t let this day pass without taking a moment to honor, celebrate, and reflect on what this day means—not just historically, but personally and collectively.

So grab your coffee, your tea, or your favorite cold drink, and let’s talk about freedom, resilience, hope, and the incredible legacy we carry.

What Is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is celebrated every year on June 19th.

It commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863.

Think about that for a moment.

Freedom had legally been declared.

But many people remained enslaved because the news had not reached them and because those benefiting from slavery delayed sharing it.

On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Texas and announced that enslaved people were free.

For many, it was a day of liberation, celebration, relief, and the beginning of a new chapter.

That day became known as Juneteenth.

More Than a History Lesson

Juneteenth is not just about a date.

It is about resilience.

It is about a people who endured unimaginable hardship and still found ways to build families, communities, businesses, churches, schools, and legacies.

It is about hope surviving circumstances that tried to destroy it.

It is about the human spirit refusing to give up.

And that is something worth celebrating.

The Legacy of Strength

As a Black woman, Juneteenth reminds me that I come from people who kept going.

People who survived.

People who dreamed of a future they might never see but worked to create anyway.

People who refused to let oppression have the final word.

Every opportunity we have today exists because somebody before us sacrificed, persevered, and believed that tomorrow could be better than today.

That matters.

Especially during times when the world feels uncertain.

Freedom Is More Than Physical

When we think about freedom, we often think about laws and rights.

And those things matter deeply.

But freedom also shows up in our everyday lives.

Freedom looks like:

  • Healing from what hurt you
  • Refusing to live in shame
  • Breaking unhealthy cycles
  • Choosing peace
  • Setting boundaries
  • Believing you are worthy
  • Living authentically

Some of the greatest freedom we can experience is the freedom to become fully ourselves.

Honoring the Past While Building the Future

One of the best ways we can honor those who came before us is to keep building.

Keep learning.

Keep growing.

Keep creating.

Keep dreaming.

Keep loving.

Keep believing in possibilities.

The people who fought for freedom did not do so simply for survival.

They did so because they believed future generations deserved the opportunity to thrive.

That includes us.

What Juneteenth Teaches Us Today

Juneteenth reminds us that:

🌿 Progress is possible.

🌿 Freedom is worth fighting for.

🌿 Hope matters.

🌿 Community matters.

🌿 Our stories matter.

🌿 Our history matters.

🌿 Our future matters.

Even when change feels slow.

Even when life feels difficult.

Even when the road ahead feels uncertain.

A Personal Reflection

As I reflect on Juneteenth, I think about all the ways we are still learning what freedom means.

Freedom from fear.

Freedom from self-doubt.

Freedom from limiting beliefs.

Freedom from the expectation that we must constantly prove our worth.

And while there is still work to be done, I am grateful.

Grateful for those who came before us.

Grateful for the progress we’ve made.

Grateful for the opportunity to keep moving forward.

Final Thoughts

Today, I hope you celebrate.

Celebrate our history.

Celebrate our resilience.

Celebrate our culture.

Celebrate our progress.

Celebrate yourself.

Because you are part of a story that is bigger than you.

A story of courage.

A story of perseverance.

A story of hope.

And a story that is still being written.

Happy Juneteenth. ❤️🖤💚

May we honor the past, embrace the present, and continue building a future filled with freedom, justice, joy, and possibility.
