THURSDAY THOUGHTS 💕WHEN LIFE FEELS LIKE TOO MUCH: START WITH THE NEXT RIGHT THING

Happy Thursday!

By Your Girl Keysha | YourGirlKeysha.com

Hey, beautiful people! 💕

Happy Thursday!

Can I ask you something?

Have you ever had SO MUCH going on that you didn’t even know which problem to deal with first?

The bills need attention.

Your job is stressing you out.

Somebody in your family needs something.

Your house needs cleaning.

Your phone has messages you haven’t answered.

There’s an appointment you need to make.

You’ve been saying you’re going to start taking better care of yourself.

And somewhere underneath all of that…

YOU’RE TIRED.

Not necessarily “I need a nap” tired.

I’m talking about:

“I don’t even know where to start” tired.

And when life gets like that, sometimes we make the mistake of thinking we need to fix EVERYTHING immediately.

So we create a huge mental list.

I need to get my finances together.

I need a new job.

I need to lose weight.

I need to go back to school.

I need to heal.

I need to fix my relationships.

I need to get closer to God.

I need to clean my house.

I need to get organized.

I need to figure out my whole LIFE.

Girl…

No wonder you’re overwhelmed. 😩😂

You are mentally trying to live six months of your life before bedtime.

So today’s Thursday Thoughts is simple:

You don’t have to fix everything today.

You just need to figure out:

WHAT IS THE NEXT RIGHT THING?

🌿 1. OVERWHELM CAN MAKE EVERYTHING FEEL URGENT

One of the hardest things about being overwhelmed is that everything starts feeling equally important.

Your brain starts screaming:

DO IT ALL.

FIX IT ALL.

ANSWER EVERYBODY.

HANDLE EVERYTHING.

NOW.

But everything isn’t an emergency.

Some things are urgent.

Some things are important.

Some things can wait.

And some things?

Girl, some things don’t even belong on your list anymore. 😂

That’s why sometimes the first step isn’t doing more.

It’s stopping long enough to decide what actually deserves your attention.

🧠 2. YOUR BRAIN NEEDS SMALLER PROBLEMS

When you’re overwhelmed, saying:

“I need to get my life together”

isn’t very helpful.

What does that even mean?

That’s huge.

Try breaking it down.

Instead of:

“I need to fix my finances.”

Try:

“Tonight I’m going to look at my bank account and write down my bills.”

Instead of:

“I need a new career.”

Try:

“Tonight I’m going to update one section of my résumé.”

Instead of:

“I need to get healthy.”

Try:

“I’m going to take a 20-minute walk today.”

Instead of:

“My house is a mess.”

Try:

“I’m cleaning the kitchen counter.”

That’s it.

Because sometimes progress begins when you make the problem small enough to approach.

💛 3. ASK YOURSELF: WHAT ACTUALLY NEEDS MY ATTENTION FIRST?

Here’s a simple way to sort through the chaos.

Ask yourself:

What needs attention TODAY?

What needs attention THIS WEEK?

What can wait?

What can someone else help me with?

And what do I need to let go of completely?

That last question is important.

Because some of us are overwhelmed partly because we’re carrying responsibilities that don’t belong to us.

Everybody else’s emergency becomes our emergency.

Everybody else’s feelings become our responsibility.

Everybody else’s problems somehow end up on our to-do list.

Sis…

Some things need to be handed BACK. 😂

You can care about people without becoming responsible for everything happening in their lives.

🌸 4. SOMETIMES THE NEXT RIGHT THING IS ASKING FOR HELP

We need to normalize this.

Sometimes your next step isn’t doing something yourself.

Sometimes it’s calling someone.

Making an appointment.

Applying for assistance.

Talking to a therapist.

Calling a community resource.

Asking your family for support.

Talking to your supervisor.

Calling the school.

Calling your doctor.

Calling the housing agency.

Asking:

“Can somebody help me figure this out?”

There is wisdom in recognizing when a situation requires more than what you currently have available.

You don’t receive bonus points in life for struggling unnecessarily.

🤎 5. STOP WAITING UNTIL YOU FEEL MOTIVATED

This one gets us every time.

“I’ll start when I feel motivated.”

Girl…

Sometimes motivation is somewhere minding its business. 😂

You may not feel motivated.

You may feel tired.

Discouraged.

Anxious.

Uncertain.

Do the small thing anyway.

You don’t need enough energy to complete the entire journey.

You need enough energy for the next step.

Sometimes action creates motivation instead of motivation creating action.

Send the email.

Make the call.

Fill out the application.

Wash the dishes.

Take the walk.

Open the document.

Read one page.

Pray for five minutes.

START.

🙏🏽 6. SOMETIMES FAITH LOOKS LIKE TAKING ONE STEP

We talk a lot about trusting God.

But trusting God doesn’t always mean knowing exactly how everything will work out.

Sometimes faith sounds like:

“God, I don’t know what happens after this step, but I know what I need to do today.”

Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us:

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Notice that Scripture talks about paths.

A path is traveled one step at a time.

God doesn’t always hand us the entire blueprint.

Sometimes He gives us enough light for the next step.

And maybe that’s all you need right now.

Not the five-year plan.

Not every answer.

Just enough clarity to do what is in front of you.

🌷 7. REST MIGHT ACTUALLY BE THE NEXT RIGHT THING

Now somebody needed THIS part. 😂

Because sometimes we’re so obsessed with productivity that we assume the next right thing must involve doing something.

Not necessarily.

Maybe you need sleep.

Maybe you need to eat.

Maybe you need to put your phone down.

Maybe you need an afternoon without solving anybody’s problems.

Maybe you need to sit somewhere quiet.

Maybe you need to cry.

Maybe you need to pray.

Maybe you need to take a mental health day if you’re able.

Rest isn’t always avoidance.

Sometimes rest is preparation.

You cannot continuously demand productivity from an exhausted mind and body.

Sometimes the next right thing is:

“Nothing else is getting done tonight.”

And that’s okay.

💅🏽 8. GIVE YOURSELF CREDIT FOR WHAT YOU DID DO

We have a bad habit of ending the day thinking about everything we DIDN’T accomplish.

Didn’t finish the laundry.

Didn’t return that email.

Didn’t go to the gym.

Didn’t finish the application.

Didn’t clean the whole house.

Okay.

But what DID you do?

You went to work.

You got the children where they needed to go.

You made dinner.

You made a phone call you’d been avoiding.

You prayed.

You showed up.

You survived a difficult conversation.

You rested instead of pushing yourself into complete exhaustion.

Progress isn’t always dramatic.

Sometimes progress looks like handling one thing that yesterday felt impossible.

Count that too.

🌼 9. CREATE YOUR “NEXT RIGHT THING” LIST

Instead of making a giant to-do list that makes you want to throw the whole notebook away…

Try this.

Write down only THREE things:

  1. ONE THING I NEED TO HANDLE.
  2. ONE THING I NEED TO DO FOR MYSELF.
  3. ONE THING I CAN LET GO OF TODAY.

That’s your list.

Maybe it looks like:

HANDLE:
Call about the overdue bill.

MYSELF:
Take a 30-minute walk.

LET GO:
Feeling responsible for fixing somebody else’s problem.

Now your brain has somewhere to start.

💭 THURSDAY REFLECTION

Take a moment and ask yourself:

What is overwhelming me the most right now?

Which problem actually needs my attention first?

What am I trying to solve today that can realistically wait?

What responsibility am I carrying that doesn’t belong to me?

Where do I need to ask for help?

What would taking care of myself look like today?

And finally:

WHAT IS THE NEXT RIGHT THING I CAN DO?

Not ten things.

One.

💛 FINAL THURSDAY THOUGHTS

Beautiful people…

Maybe you don’t need to “get your whole life together.”

Maybe you just need to stop looking at your entire life at once.

You don’t climb a staircase in one giant leap.

You take a step.

Then another.

Then another.

And eventually you look back and realize:

Wow.

I’ve come a long way.

So if life feels overwhelming right now, don’t demand that yourself have every answer.

Handle what needs handling.

Ask for help where you need it.

Rest when your body tells you to rest.

Pray.

Make the appointment.

Send the email.

Fill out the application.

Drink some water.

Take the walk.

Do ONE thing.

And then give yourself permission to breathe.

Tomorrow?

We’ll handle tomorrow.

Today?

Just do the next right thing.

Love,

Your Girl Keysha 💕
