Sis, joy is not a reward you receive after you’ve finished struggling.
Hey sis… 💛
Can we talk?
Some of us are really good at surviving.
Like… professional-level survival. 😂
Give us a crisis and suddenly we’re project managers.
Money gets funny? We’ll figure it out.
Family needs something? We’re there.
Something goes wrong at work? Handled.
Everybody else is falling apart? Somehow we’re the one giving the motivational speech.
But ask us:
“What do you do just because it makes you happy?”
And suddenly we’re buffering.
Loading…
Please wait…
😂
Because somewhere along the way, many of us learned how to manage life without actually learning how to enjoy it.
And Girl to Girl?
I don’t want us to spend our entire lives surviving things and never give ourselves permission to actually live.
🌸 WHEN DID JOY BECOME SOMETHING YOU HAD TO EARN?
Think about how often we tell ourselves:
I’ll relax after I finish everything.
I’ll travel when I make more money.
I’ll buy myself something nice after I accomplish this goal.
I’ll take a day off when everybody else is okay.
I’ll celebrate when I finally get where I’m trying to go.
Girl…
When exactly is that supposed to be?
Because the laundry is coming back.
The emails will reproduce overnight.
Somebody somewhere is going to need something.
And there will always be another goal.
If happiness can only happen after everything is handled…
you might be waiting forever.
💛 YOUR LIFE IS NOT ONE LONG TO-DO LIST
You are a human being.
Not a productivity machine.
Not everybody’s emergency contact.
Not the family problem solver.
Not the designated strong friend.
Not somebody’s personal ATM.
Not the woman who exists solely to make everybody else’s life easier.
You get to have a life too.
A life with laughter.
Rest.
Friendship.
Good food.
Music.
Travel.
Love.
Hobbies.
Silly moments.
Beautiful memories.
And things that have absolutely nothing to do with being productive.
🌿 SOME OF US FEEL SAFER STRUGGLING THAN RESTING
This one gets deeper.
When you’ve spent a long time dealing with instability, chaos, financial stress, unhealthy relationships, or constantly having to be responsible…
Peace can feel strange.
You finally get a quiet moment and instead of enjoying it, your brain starts looking around like:
“Okay… what’s about to happen?” 😩
Nothing, sis.
Maybe nothing is happening.
Maybe you’re just having a peaceful Tuesday.
And that’s allowed.
You don’t have to create a problem because you’re uncomfortable without one.
Sometimes healing means learning that peace doesn’t need an explanation.
👑 STOP MAKING YOURSELF LAST ON YOUR OWN LIST
Women are often praised for how much we sacrifice.
She’s such a good mother because she gives everything to her children.
She’s such a good daughter because she’s always available.
She’s such a good friend because she’ll drop everything.
She’s such a good partner because she puts everybody first.
Okay…
But who is taking care of her?
And more importantly:
Is she taking care of herself?
Loving people doesn’t require abandoning yourself.
You can be generous without draining yourself.
You can be supportive without becoming responsible for everybody.
You can love your family deeply and still have boundaries.
You can show up for others and still show up for you.
💅🏽 AND GIRL… USE THE GOOD STUFF
You know those candles you’re saving?
Light them.
That perfume you’re saving for a “special occasion”?
Ma’am, you’re alive today. Spray it. 😂
Wear the outfit.
Take yourself to brunch.
Put flowers in your house.
Use the fancy dishes.
Book the massage when your budget allows.
Take pictures even if you haven’t reached your goal weight.
Go somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit.
Stop waiting until your life looks Instagram-worthy before you decide it’s worthy of being enjoyed.
Ordinary days deserve beauty too.
🤎 JOY DOESN’T HAVE TO BE EXPENSIVE
And because somebody just looked at their bank account after I said “book the trip”… 😂
Listen.
Joy doesn’t require a luxury budget.
Sometimes joy looks like:
Sitting outside with your coffee.
Playing your favorite 90s R&B while cleaning the house.
Walking somewhere beautiful.
Calling the friend who makes you laugh until you can’t breathe.
Going to a free community event.
Cooking your favorite meal.
Reading a book.
Taking yourself on a $10 date.
Turning your phone off for an hour.
Watching the sunset.
Dancing around your kitchen like you’re on tour.
Joy is often hiding inside ordinary moments we’re moving too fast to notice.
🙏🏽 GOD DIDN’T CREATE YOU ONLY TO STRUGGLE
Sometimes faith gets reduced to endurance.
Just keep pushing.
Just keep praying.
Just survive another season.
And yes, faith helps us endure difficult things.
But Scripture also talks about joy.
Peace.
Rest.
Celebration.
Community.
Love.
Abundance of life.
God isn’t only present in your suffering.
He’s present in your laughter too.
You don’t dishonor everything you’ve survived by enjoying your life.
In many ways, enjoying your life is one way of honoring the fact that you survived it.
🌷 STOP POSTPONING YOURSELF
Maybe you’re waiting until you lose 30 pounds to feel beautiful.
Wear the dress now.
Maybe you’re waiting for a relationship before you start traveling.
Take the trip you can take now.
Maybe you’re waiting until you have a certain amount of money before you celebrate your progress.
Buy the cupcake.
Maybe you’re waiting for someone else to make memories with you.
Girl…
Become someone you enjoy spending time with.
Your life doesn’t begin when someone chooses you.
It doesn’t begin when you make six figures.
It doesn’t begin when you buy the house.
It doesn’t begin when everything heals.
You’re already in it.
🧠 TRY CREATING A “JOY LIST”
We make grocery lists.
To-do lists.
Goal lists.
Prayer lists.
Budget lists.
But when was the last time you made a list of things that simply make you happy?
This week, write down 20 things that bring you joy.
Big and small.
Then intentionally choose one or two every week.
Not because you’ve earned them.
Not because you’ve finished everything.
Simply because your emotional well-being deserves attention too.
📝 GIRL, ASK YOURSELF…
- What have I been postponing until my life becomes “better”?
- When was the last time I did something purely because I enjoyed it?
- Do I feel guilty when I rest or spend time on myself? Why?
- What does joy look like for me in this season—not five years from now?
- What is one thing I can do this week that would make me feel more alive?
💬 FINAL GIRL TO GIRL
Sis…
You’ve spent enough years saying:
“Once I get through this…”
And then you get through it…
And there’s something else.
That’s life.
There will always be responsibilities.
There will always be goals.
There may always be something you’re healing, building, fixing, learning, or praying about.
But somewhere between all of that…
PLEASE LIVE.
Laugh loudly.
Celebrate small wins.
Make memories.
Rest without explaining yourself.
Wear the good perfume.
Eat the dessert.
Take the pictures.
Call your friends.
Thank God for ordinary Tuesdays.
And stop believing joy belongs exclusively to some future version of you who finally has everything together.
She doesn’t exist.
But you do.
Right here.
Right now.
And sis…
you deserve to experience some joy while you’re here. 💛
Love,
Your Girl Keysha
